I have a degree in Biology and am a qualified teacher, formerly in a comprehensive school and then in a sixth-form college. I retired from teaching in July 2004 to take up hypnotherapy full time. I became interested in hypnotherapy when I learnt self-hypnosis in order to control the pain from a shoulder injury. I discovered the innate ability we all have to heal ourselves, if we desire to, by harnessing the ‘inner power’ of the mind.
I developed the shoulder injury in the late 1990s. The medical profession could not help me and said I would have to learn to live with it. This was a very painful condition and I could not raise my arm above shoulder height. The self-hypnosis workshop really opened my eyes to the power of the subconscious mind and this fascination led me to do the full hypnotherapy training for 15 months. I qualified as a hypnotherapist in 2000.
I learnt the importance of visualisation and metaphors, the ‘inner power’ we all have to make changes in our lives to control pain and to heal the body. With hypnosis there are few limits to what you can achieve. The amazing thing is that we all have this ‘inner power’ in the unconscious mind to make changes relatively quickly and changes that last.
I found self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy so empowering that I felt compelled to tell everyone about it. In 2000 I started to see a few clients. I never thought that I would leave teaching as I enjoyed it so much. However, in four years I was seeing so many clients that I could no longer do both jobs. Thus I made a very difficult decision and retired from teaching after 35 years. I have had no regrets as I absolutely love my present work because I find it so fulfilling.
